That’s an awful lot.

As you may or may not know, we have several UK members-each of whom in their own way works towards maintaining the rights of children with imprisoned parents domestically.

Two of our members, the Prison Advice and Care Trust (PACT) and Action for Prisoners’ Families are quite busy this week with the launch of a new campaign.  Working together alongside a third organisation, NSPCC, they’ve pulled together a campaign we are pleased to present.

“Left Outside”, focused on raising awareness on the needs of children with imprisoned parents launched on February 22 with the support of Lord Justice Goldring.

As part of the campaign, awareness-raising posters are going up in every court in England and Wales which are aimed at defendants, solicitors and anyone who may be left caring for a prisoners’ child or relative. These posters have the details of national helpline numbers and the new website, which contains resources and information for anyone affected by this issue.

Busy, that is, for the General Committee on Human Rights, Democracy, & Humanitarian Questions-which will be hosting a panel on judicial systems and prison reform.

The platform for this panel is being provided by the 11th annual winter meeting of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

Participation is expected from former UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Manfred Nowak; Bill Browder of Hermitage Capital Management, who will speak about the case of Sergei Magnitsky; and Eugenia Tymoshenko, daughter of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence.

The discussion is set to focus on specific cases from Italy and Guantanamo Bay.

An expected 250 parliamentarians from more than 50 nations are set to attend, which could mean great progress in the arena of prison reform.
