Strengthening Support for Families with Multiple Problems Conference

Debbie Cowley-currently the director for Eurochips’ Full Member Action for Prisoners’ Families is scheduled to participate in a panel at a UK national policy conference in London next week.

The conference, entitled Strengthening Support for Families with Multiple Problems, will focus on an integrated approach to supporting families with complex needs.  The topic is currently a focus in the UK government as the prime minister recently created the new Troubled Families Unit at the Department for Communities and Local Government.

This session will explore the government’s ambitions and plans by:

-outlining the background to the government’s renewed emphasis on tackling these families

-exploring the application of the 2011 ESF funding programme for families with multiple problems

-examining how local and national partners can work together to move troubled families into work

-considering the evidence from other recent family intervention work

An organisation entitled Spurgeons will be presenting the topic of children with imprisoned parents in the afternoon of the conference.  Their project, entitled Invisible Walls, focuses on the complex nature of the relationship between children with imprisoned parents and their mothers or fathers.

We’ve only recently discovered the work of Spurgeons and are excited to learn more about their programs in various UK prisons.

We are proud of the participation and expertise provided to the conference by Action for Prisoners’ Families, and look forward to receiving an update of the meeting next week.

If you are interested in learning more about the conference, please visit the site and don’t hesitate to contact us for further details.

Human Rights Council meeting on the rights of the child

This year marks the 19th session of the Human Rights Council, which hosts a string of conferences from February 27-March 23.

Amongst the various issues covered by the Human Rights Council, March 8th will be host to that most dear to our cause; the Annual Meeting on the Rights of the Child-which will focus specifically this year on children & the administration of justice.

Naturally, we are excited to be attending.  Topics in the agenda for this meeting include:

-an introduction on justice for children

-child testimony

-worrying trends (the overuse of criminal justice)

-children in judicial proceedings

-concerns relating to health

and

-children of imprisoned parents

We are particularly pleased to note that children with imprisoned parents have their own allocated time slot amongst the conversation.  Their condition is unique within many conversations surrounding detention as they themselves are not criminals but are still exposed to many issues involving detention (prison-visits, separation, etc…)

We will keep you all posted on the progress of the meeting and look forward to engaging with international bodies to discuss this vulnerable group of children.

As always, thank you for your support.

All the very best,

Your Eurochips Staff

Meet our Belgian Members, Relais Enfants-Parents ASBL

Happy Monday to you all.

We’re starting something new around here on the first day of the week.  We think it’d be nice to take a moment at the beginning of the week to introduce you to some of the Eurochips members.

Each Monday, we will highlight a member to inform you an idea of the various nations and partners we work amongst within our network.

So, without further ado, let’s begin Member Monday, shall we?

Today, we’d like to introduce you to the Relais Enfants-Parents ASBL.

Based in Brussels, our friends and members at the Relais Enfants-Parents ASBL work for the rights set forward in the Convention on the Rights of the Child, particularly in relation to article 9 and children with imprisoned parents in Brussels.

Some of their programs include:

-Facilitating workshops in which imprisoned parents can discuss the various difficulties surrounding the separation between themselves and their children.  These workshops use a creative approach to inspire conversation between family members.

-Providing psychological support to imprisoned parents in regards to their role as father or mother within the family and how it has been affected as a result of incarceration.

-Aiding parents in finding adequate services for their social and familial rehabilitation.

-Working in collaboration with volunteers from the Belgium Red Cross to provide transportation for children traveling to various prison visiting centres to see their parents.

-Providing various spatial planning (including games and other play equipment) for the visiting centres in which children meet their imprisoned parents.

If you’d like to learn more about our esteemed Belgian members, please visit their website.

For further inquiries on their services or those of other Eurochips members, please do not hesitate to contact us.

As always, thank you for stopping by our blog and taking the time to discover more about our cause for European children with imprisoned parents.
